Webinar: The Future of Work-Integrated Learning and Experiential Education: Vision and insights

Advances in Research, Theory and Practice in Work-integrated Learning and Experiential Education: Enhancing Employability for a Sustainable Future is a timely publication given the global emphasis on work-integrated learning (WIL) as a key strategy for enhancing student employability outcomes and lifelong learning capabilities.

The webinar will reflect on:
  • Existing scholarship and practice in WIL and Experiential Education
  • Critique contemporary insights
  • Provide a synopsis of resonating themes
  • Recommend areas for future research and practice in WIL and Experiential Education.
A range of topics including curriculum, and assessment design; stakeholder engagement in a WIL context; quality WIL frameworks; diverse forms of WIL; and WIL leadership will be addressed. Emerging opportunities and issues will be highlighted, and key recommendations critical to advancing WIL and Experiential Education scholarship and practiceoutlined. Researchers, practitioners, workplace and community partners, university leaders, and policy makers will benefit from the insights covered in the webinar.


About the Presenters

Dr Sonia Ferns , Associate Professor has experience across diverse educational sectors. She is currently an Adjunct with Curtin University and is a Managing Partner in LearnWork Consulting. She has previously taught cross-disciplinary STEM subjects, conducted professional development for staff to improve institutional quality, and worked in collaboration with industry to lead the renewal of mining engineering at Curtin University’s Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). She has expertise in curriculum and assessment design, industry engagement, and work-integrated learning (WIL). Sonia has also led high profile strategic projects on curriculum renewal, institutional WIL and curriculum optimisation. She has led nationally funded research projects and published extensively.

Dr Anna D. Rowe (SFHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in Academic Development at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. She has published widely in work-integrated learning with specific areas of research interest including curriculum, pedagogy, supervision, transferable skills, and the role of emotions in learning. Anna is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning (IJWIL), and a past Director of the Australian Collaborative Education Network (ACEN) National Board.

Dr Karsten E. Zegwaard, Associate Professor and Director of Work-Integrated Learning Research at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Karsten is Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning (IJWIL), Vice-President of Work-Integrated Learning NZ (WILNZ), member of the Universities NZ WIL Working Group, board member of the World Association of Cooperative Education (WACE), and Vice-Chair (Oceania) of the WACE International Research Committee. Karsten has been the recipient of the CEIA Ralph W. Tyler, WACE Donald McLaren Academic Award, the James W. Wilson Award, and the Fellow of Work-Integrated Learning New Zealand award.

Thalia M. Mulvihill, Ph.D., works as a Professor of Higher Education and Social Foundations in the Department of Educational Leadership at Ball State University. Dr. Mulvihill is a historian and sociologist of higher education. She teaches several qualitative research methods and academic writing courses for doctoral students and has authored eight books as well as over 90 refereed publications, co-edits The Teacher Educator journal, and is the recipient of numerous teaching, research, and mentoring awards.
