Join this seminar for a simple introduction to the challenge of doing a grounded theory with online sources. Whether you are a first-time user of grounded theory or an experienced one, this seminar will inspire you to explore online data sources as a foundation for your grounded theory study. The joy of grounded theory is simple and well rewards any effort. Because grounded theory method has robust coding procedures, it enables detailed engagement with the data and invariably gives new insights. A significant number of social settings are now online, and it is important that we have effective ways of studying those settings. This seminar will give you a brief primer into four key issues. First, we’ll take a brief look at the background of grounded theory as a methodology. Second, we’ll consider the design of your online grounded theory study — a good research design is key to the success of any research project, and online sources do present certain challenges. Third, we will look at the range of online sources that could be used for the design of a grounded theory study. Fourth, we’ll look at an example of how we might code an online source and enact theoretical sampling. This is important because grounded theory method has a distinct way of approaching the analysis of data. We’ll conclude by considering the advantages grounded theory might give over other methods when using online sources.
